Habitat Happenings - October 2021
A Message From Our ReStore Manager
You think that you’re familiar with our ReStore in CMCH, but are you?
Most people see the store as our main fundraiser for our homebuilding and advocacy projects (and they’re right!), but there’s so much more going on behind the scenes. The ReStore not only provides a place for people who believe in our mission to donate their gently used furniture, homegoods, architectural salvage, and appliances, but also takes a strong conservational stance, diverting over 936,000 tons of consumable merchandise from landfills last year, and ethically disposing of unusable materials.
Not only are we taking care of the environment, we’re also taking care of our community! The ReStore impacts more than just the families whose homebuilds are funded through ReStore sales; the ReStore provides affordable goods to the community at large, creates employment opportunities, and fosters a safe and rewarding environment for our 30+ (and growing!) regular volunteers.
Oh, did we mention safety? The ReStore is not only committed to the safety of our staff and volunteers, but to the safety of our shoppers as well; we take care to test our electronics and appliances, check to make sure that potential donations are not on any recall lists, and do not accept items that are deemed unsafe. But you probably already knew that. Did you know that not only do we sanitize all of our merchandise, but that we also inspect it prior to acceptance for evidence of carpet beetle or bed bug infestation? And in case we missed anything, we have a canine inspection team come through routinely to double check our work!
But we’re larger than just Cape May County; our community of passionate advocates spans the globe, and we tithe to international efforts to provide safe, affordable housing across the world. During the month of October the ReStore is collecting donations for Haiti disaster relief to rebuild homes devastated by the recent earthquake.
So the next time you have a dresser to donate or come see us to replace your couch, remember that we’re more than just a resale store and that it’s through your support that we can continue to make a difference.
Look for our table during Unity Day at Fox Park Amphitheater in Wildwood on October 9th from 12pm to 5pm. Local churches, police and fire department, and community organizations will be uniting to provide information to the community. There will also be music, worship, free food and lots of fun. If you would like to volunteer as a Habitat representative send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
