Chelsea and her son Jackson

" Life has thrown us a handful of curveballs from the pandemic dictating a major job, change to Jackson's Type One Diabetes diagnosis and all the life changes and expenses that entailed. Even with life seeming to get turned upside down I have always been determined not to let the hurdles keep me from building the life I know my son deserves; but one major thing kept slipping out of my reach: secure and affordable housing.

I applied to be chosen as a Habitat for Humanity partner family in March 2022, keeping my fingers crossed to be able to purchase a safe, secure and affordable home through the Pathway to Homeownership Program.

Being selected as a Partner family has opened a door that I thought was going to remain closed to us for the foreseeable future and we are beyond grateful and excited!  Owning my own home means Jackson gets to go to bed and wake up knowing there isn't another move in our future and that he finally has his own place to build more happy memories. It also means that he can stay in the same community his medically trained caretakers and his great group of supportive friends are in. The Pathway to Homeownership program means housing insecurity is behind us and a blessed and bright future is ahead!" - Chelsea

Miriam & John, and their two children Lorelei &Thomas

5 years ago this fall our family learned of our daughter's true diagnosis, Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T for short). From then on it has felt as though there has been a detour at every possible turn. Our daughter was only 7 years old at the time and our son just turned 1 year. A-T is a rare, hereditary condition characterized by progressive neurologic problems that lead to difficulty walking, feeding and swallowing issues, lung disease with immunodeficiencies and an increased risk of developing various types of cancer. We are very much in need of an affordable, one level home with ramps and many modifications for her to feel secure and gain some independence back.

Nine years ago we moved into an upstairs duplex on an extremely busy street at an unsafe bend. Horrific accidents often happen in front of our house. We have been praying and searching for our dream home with all the necessary modifications and an accessible backyard that is safe for both children. However, we cannot afford a house in the current market. It is financially challenging to fully care for a special and medical needs child. The majority of her caregiving is done by me, including travel to and from Philly for appointments with specialists.

Well, we are now living proof that God answers prayers. That's why with God all things are possible. We are forever grateful to everyone at HHCMC who are making this dream come true, turning our wishes into actual reality for the 4 of us. It feels surreal. We know this blessing is coming at such a good part of our journey, that we cannot wait to call this future house "our home sweet home". - Miriam

It’s finally happened! We have an excavation contractor to clear the densely forested land on Ocean Avenue. Both lots are packed with mature growth trees and brush. For months we have been desperately seeking a response and/or action on a proposal from a multitude of companies.

As of Monday, June 6th, we can officially say a deposit has been made and we are now on the schedule. In order to get to the point where we can break out the power tools, the alignment of many moving parts is happening in the background. Bringing together architects, engineers, municipal offices, sub-contractors and suppliers is an art form and we are working to perfect that with each project. At this time, we have five projects on the board and continue to take steps daily to move each of them along. Two of those projects have the potential to house several families so we are especially excited for what the future holds.

The promising part about our position with so many opportunities is that we are financially poised for and have planned to be able to manage them all, thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsors, volunteers and the success of the ReStore.

Meet Our New Operations Manager

I’m very pleased to announce that Elizabeth Franco is being promoted to Operations Manager for Habitat Cape May.

Since her arrival to our organization in August 2022, she has achieved a lot in the areas of marketing, homeowner selection and fundraising. Her time and talents can be seen in the production of many events held over the last two years, improved content for communications, advertising and online media, and she brings excellent organization skills and energy to our fundraising process. Now, she will share her knowledge and experience to further strengthen opportunities and our presence in the community through oversight of the Community Engagement Ambassador and Social Media Coordinator positions.

Please join me in congratulating Liz and wishing her the best of luck in her new role.

Meet Our NewVolunteer Coordinator

Kathy Grubelic started her career in the insurance industry and after many years, decided to change careers and join the nonprofit world, working with organizations who support people with disabilities.  Finding the work very rewarding, she used the skills acquired corporately and helped further the mission of the organization through marketing, fundraising, office management, etc.  Recently relocated to Cape May County, Kathy saw the opportunity for Community Engagement Ambassador for Habitat Cape May and felt it would be a great fit.  She is looking forward to getting to know everyone and helping to further our mission.
