Habitat Happenings - August 2021

Home Dedication Celebration

On Friday July 9th, 2021, Habitat for Humanity Cape May County dedicated the newest Habitat Home in Marmora and a week later Kimberly Staiano purchased the home for her and her twin girls at an affordable price.

The home was originally moved from Avalon to the lot in Upper Township thanks to Adam Szyfman who donated the house to Habitat. Volunteers completed the construction process by logging nearly 4,000 hours of build activities. Over 20 local businesses also contributed donated or discounted building materials and services to the project –such as roofing, doors, refuse containers, flooring, septic system and other professional services.

“My heart is full. It has been such a long road and I just prayed and prayed and prayed for something to change.” Kim Staiano upon hearing she was selected as the newest Habitat Homeowner Partner.

We have begun constructing another single-family home in Upper Township and will continue to build in the Marmora area with two more homes slated for 2022.

11th Annual Golf Tournament

On July 12th, 2021, the 11th Annual Golf Tournament Dinner and Auction was held at The Shore Club to support Habitat Cape May's construction programs.

The proceeds from the Golf Tournament stay in our local community to help Habitat to build, preserve and finance affordable homeownership opportunities within Cape May County.

During this event, we held a putting contest, a competitive four-person better ball, and we ended with a 2 hour premium open bar with dinner prizes, fishbowl silent, and live auctions.

The supporters of this years tournament are responsible for raising over $35,000 that goes directly towards building homes with Habitat family partners who will purchase their home from Habitat via an affordable, low-interest mortgage.

Affordable Housing Crisis

Record-breaking numbers of families in the United States cannot afford a decent place to call home.

Each year the shortage of affordable housing gets worse, with 1 in 7 households paying half or more of their income on their home. Families are left with much less money for other necessities such as nutrition, education, transportation, childcare and health care.

The extreme difficulty to access housing can lead to negative effects on other aspects of life such as health outcomes, environmental outcomes, financial stability and wealth building, civic and social engagement, educational outcomes, and economic impact.

At Habitat we work to increase supply and preservation of affordable homes, equitably increase access to credit, optimize land use for affordable homes, and ensure access to and development of communities of opportunity.

But we are also here to advocate by serving as a voice for our community members who are struggling to find and acquire affordable housing. We need your support by joining us in our upcoming campaign Keeping Our Community S.A.F.E. (Sheltered and Future Engaged).

If  you or someone you know is struggling to find affordable housing we ask you, your family and/or friends to anonymously tell your story to help inspire the people of our community to put an effort towards creating change.
